Neugarten Family Birth Center at Northern Dutchess Hospital

The Neugarten Family Birth Center at Northern Dutchess Hospital (NDH) offers progressive and expert maternity care in private, single rooms where you can labor, deliver, recover and room-in with your new baby until discharge.

Opened in 1985 as the first hospital-based birthing center in New York State, we deliver close to 900 babies each year.

The multidisciplinary team includes physicians and certified nurse midwives on the medical staff of NDH; and because it is a hospital birth center, it also includes nurses, anesthesiologists and support staff who will work together to provide sophisticated, specialized medical care for you and your baby.

Benefits of Breastfeeding

Both the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend breastfeeding because breast milk gives your baby the best nutrition as well as protection against infection. While one year is recommended, shorter breastfeeding periods also provide health benefits.

How babies benefit:

  • Breast milk is easier for babies to digest
  • Breast milk is readily available
  • Breastfed babies have fewer colds, flu and ear infections, less diarrhea and less constipation
  • Breastfeeding helps protect against SIDS, diabetes, allergies and asthma

How moms benefit:

  • Decreases post-partum blood loss when breastfeeding begins immediately after delivery
  • Builds close bond with baby
  • Burns more calories for faster weight loss
  • Reduces risk of breast and ovarian cancers
  • Increases bone strength to decrease the risk of fractures in old age

Breastfeeding Products

New mothers at Northern Dutchess Hospital have the option to rent breastfeeding pumps to help them breastfeed. Medela Symphony hospital-grade breast pumps can be rented for $40 per month, $30 per week or $2.50 per day. Pump parts and other supplies are also available. Please call (845) 871-3365 for more information.
