Current Volunteer Opportunities

Patient Care Opportunities

  • Critical Care Waiting Room Assistant: Volunteers provide emotional support to patients and their families in the critical care waiting area. Our volunteers let patients and their families know that someone is concerned about their emotional and physical needs, and we are there to assist in finding solutions to their concerns.
  • Dyson Infusion Center: Volunteers assist patients in treatment for cancer, round on waiting areas to ensure they are clean and stocked for patients and visitors, and escort family members to patient care areas.
  • Emergency Department: The volunteer role in the Emergency Department is to communicate our genuine concern and compassion for patients and their families, and volunteers reassure patients and their families that someone is caring for their emotional needs.
  • Friendly Visitor: These volunteers visit with patients, providing friendly conversation and personal items needed to make them feel comfortable.
  • Outpatient Registration: Volunteers support Outpatient Registration staff with welcoming our patients, and their guests, and guiding them through registration for procedures.
  • Patient Care Areas: Here, volunteers assist our professional and paraprofessional staff with delivering excellent patient care.
  • Pet Therapy: This program welcomes volunteers, whose dogs are qualified with an approved organization, to engage with patients and staff throughout the hospital. Volunteers must be 18 years or older to participate and able to commit to at least three visits per month.

Non-Patient Care Opportunities

  • Administration and Clerical: This opportunity offers volunteers the chance to provide much-needed administrative support for the hospital staff in various departments. Volunteers should have skills suited to office management, file management, labeling, running errands, reception of walk-in patients and phone inquiries, and other general office duties.
  • Gift Shop: Volunteers handle the cash register, provide sales assistance, stock shelves and interact with the visitors. Gift shop volunteers must be comfortable handling money, very personable and demonstrate excellent customer service skills.

Become a Student Volunteer

We offer a summer student volunteer program for high school students ages 16-18 (must be 16 years old by June 1, 2020). A minimum commitment of 48 volunteer hours is required during the summer months of July and August. Students volunteer one day a week for 8 hours a day. All student volunteering involves patient care either on the nursing floors, outpatient or surgical areas or as a discharge concierge.

This is a great opportunity to show colleges and employers that you have a serious interest in learning more about the field of healthcare. Volunteers will experience what it’s like to interact with patients and staff in a real-world setting, and gain valuable knowledge that will help them with their educational and professional goals.

Join the VBMC Auxiliary

Another great way to serve is to join the Vassar Brothers Medical Center Auxiliary, founded in 1915.

By organizing, coordinating and conducting activities that benefit both Vassar Brothers Medical Center and the community, the Auxiliary strives to promote community support while raising needed funds.

Among the Auxiliary’s activities are:

  • The Gift Shop, located in the main lobby of Vassar Brothers Medical Center
  • Spring and Winter Luncheon events
  • Commemorative brick sales for VBMC's “Walkway of Hope”
  • A variety of sales held throughout the year at the hospital, including seasonal flower sales
