Partnering with your referring doctor

Your primary care physician may refer you to us for a variety of imaging services, but imaging also is an especially important diagnostic tool for many medical specialties, including cancer, cardiology and a variety of orthopedic conditions. When you visit any of our locations for imaging services, your results will be shared with your referring provider.

Meeting your needs

While most of our imaging procedures are relatively quick and painless, our compassionate staff understands the apprehension you may have regarding imaging, so we do everything we can to help you feel relaxed and comfortable throughout your visit. Please ask if you have any questions before, during or after your procedure.

Convenient locations and hours

We offer several convenient locations throughout the Hudson Valley for imaging services. Same-day appointments may be available for some procedures.

Bone mineral density testing

Bone mineral density testing is used to test for osteoporosis. This painless procedure uses an extremely low dose of radiation to image two areas (usually lower spine and one hip) to determine how much calcium and other minerals are in the bones.

Computerized Tomography scan (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and PET/CT

Some conditions are easier to diagnose with a CT, and some with MRI. Your doctor will choose the best test for you.

A CT (or CAT) scan makes it possible to diagnose certain diseases earlier and more accurately than would be possible with other imaging tools. It can be a quick and efficient way to see inside parts of the body that cannot be seen on X-rays, such as the brain, lungs and organs in the chest cavity.

MRI is a versatile, powerful tool that is used to diagnose many diseases. It can quickly generate thin-section images of any part of the body — including the heart, arteries and veins — from any angle and direction. An MRI is especially good for visualizing dense body parts, such as the spinal cord and tendons and ligaments around the shoulder and knee.

PET/CT is a state-of-the-art imaging tool that combines two scan techniques — a PET scan and a CT scan — in one exam. PET/CT is mainly used for diagnosing, staging or restaging malignant disease and metastases and for evaluation of treatment response. It may also be used to differentiate dementia from Alzheimer's disease

Digital and 3D mammography

Early detection is key to fighting breast cancer, and mammography plays an important role in screening. Our imaging centers use state-of-the-art digital mammography equipment with an ImageChecker system to give an instant "second opinion" for radiologists.

The Dyson Breast Center at Vassar Brothers Medical Center offers the latest mammography technique, the 3D mammogram. With 3D mammography, the equipment moves around the breast and takes pictures at a variety of angles to construct a three-dimensional image of the breast tissue. Benefits of 3D mammography include:

  • Lower rate of false positives
  • Ability to detect, with greater accuracy, smaller breast cancers sooner
  • Can be performed with less breast compression than traditional mammograms, resulting in more comfort and less anxiety

Currently, 3D mammography is only available at the Dyson Breast Center. Learn more about the Dyson Breast Center, or call (845) 790-8855.

We support women’s health through a variety of additional imaging techniques. Learn more about women’s health imaging services.

Electromyography (EMG) and Electroencephalogram (EEG)

EMG tests the activity of nerves and muscles. A specially trained neurologist will perform your test, which starts with a nerve conduction portion in which electrodes are put on the skin with cream and removed when done. The electromyography is then performed by placing a fine, disposable needle into muscles to record their activity. Learn more about EMG.

EEG determines the activity level in the brain by attaching electrodes to the scalp. Learn more about EEG.

Fluoroscopy is an advanced type of X-ray that allows your radiologist to view internal structures with increased detail and sharpness. This exam may require you to drink liquid barium, which looks like a lightly colored milkshake. Your radiologist then will be able to watch the liquid pass through your digestive tract.

Interventional radiology

Interventional radiology uses minimally invasive, image-guided procedures to both diagnose and treat diseases in nearly every organ. Needles and other tiny instruments are guided through the body with the help of X-ray, ultrasound, CT or MRI. The approach can help patients avoid invasive surgical procedures. Depending on the procedure, you may be treated in one of our offices or hospitals.

Nuclear medicine

Nuclear medicine can determine activity within various organ systems with very small amounts of radioactive material that are either injected or swallowed. Images are then taken of the area of interest to see if the system is functioning as expected. The exam is conducted in a relaxed, lying down position and is usually painless. The level of radioactivity is minimal and dissipates quickly. Learn more about nuclear medicine.

Ultrasound imaging is a method of creating real-time images from inside the human body through the use of high-frequency sound waves. No radiation is used in ultrasound imaging.

X-ray is often the first and fastest approach to diagnosing many conditions from bone ailments to gastric disturbances to breathing difficulties. Results are quickly available, so you can get the care you need without delay. Learn more about diagnostic radiology, including X-ray.
