Posted: 10/10/2018

Dr. Huan Joanne Sun, a thoracic surgeon, recently joined the Health Quest Medical Practice Division of Thoracic Surgery.

“With advancements in healthcare being made every day, I look forward to providing quality care to patients in the Hudson Valley using the latest surgical technology,” Sun said.

Thoracic surgery involves operating on organs inside the chest, called the thorax, to treat various conditions, such as lung disease.

Board-certified in general surgery, Sun will oversee the care of patients at Vassar Brothers Medical Center and Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel.

Dr. Sun has special interest in lung cancer screenings, treatment of lung cancer, mediastinal disease, the development of a group of tumors near the lungs, pleural effusion, excess fluid accumulation around the lung, and thoracic-related infections.

Prior to joining Health Quest, she received her medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine in Manhattan and furthered her education with a general surgery residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center, beginning in 2008 and ending in 2015.

After her residency, Sun went on to complete a thoracic surgery fellowship at New York University Langone Medical Center in Manhattan.

From 2010 to 2012, she served as a research fellow at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, where she worked in a laboratory that analyzed gene expression, the process of DNA being made into another product, such as a protein, and gene function in lung cancer.

Sun has extensive research experience, with publications in 13 scholarly journals, book chapters and post presentations.

The Division of Thoracic Surgery is at 45 Reade Place, Dyson Center for Cancer Care Third Floor, Poughkeepsie. Reach the office at 845-483-6920 (TTY 1-800-421-1220). For more information, visit https://www.healthquest.org/cancer/lung-cancer-in-the-hudson-valley.aspx.
