Putnam Hospital Center Wellness patient joins Get Fit Hudson Valley challenge

It’s a Wednesday morning and John Hughes is sweating it out at the Putnam Hospital Wellness Center, jumping from elliptical to bicycle to rowing machines.

IHughes has a new lease on life and he’s keeping track of it all through the Get Fit Hudson Valley challenge.

I“When I saw Get Fit, I was all over it,” said Hughes, 55, of Carmel. “It gave me an incentive to stick with it. I’m using Get Fit to keep going, to inspire me and it’s working.”

IGet Fit Hudson Valley is a 6-week fitness challenge in the fall and spring launched by Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Northern Dutchess Hospital, Putnam Hospital Center, Health Quest Medical Practice and dozens of allies to encourage the Hudson Valley community to be active and stay in shape.

IHughes had a heart attack in October. As part of his recovery, he went to cardiac rehabilitation at Putnam Hospital Center, a program he described as “phenomenal” and “inspiring.”

IHe has since joined Wellness, working out three days a week on the program. When he’s not at Wellness, Hughes is making friends and logging miles walking on the Putnam County Trailway. Not only is the weight coming off, Hughes said, but he is also gaining endurance and the motivation to eat right.

I“There is nothing as structured as the Wellness program and the Get Fit challenge. I’m glad I found them,” Hughes said. “The prizes would be the icing on the cake, but the real bonus is participating and making a lifestyle change.”
