Northern Dutchess Hospital’s stroke care given Gold Plus status

Northern Dutchess Hospital was recently recognized for its high standard of emergency stroke care as the recipient of Get with the Guidelines®- Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.

The award comes from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association based on how fast, safely and effectively Northern Dutchess treated stroke patients, including the critical time between a patient’s arrival in the emergency department and administration of a clot-busting drug called tPA.

“This award ensures the community that when they come to Northern Dutchess Hospital for stroke care, they are receiving the most appropriate treatment,” said Dr. Andrew Wilson, emergency department director. “Every tick of clock signifies irreversible damage to brain cells, so ‘time is brain.’ Every second counts to help reverse this process.”

The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s nationally recognized research-based guidelines help Northern Dutchess staff improve their delivery of care. The program offers a Web-based patient management tool to track quality measures as well as discharge protocols, standing orders and more. The Gold Plus award is the highest level of achievement and is based on how long Northern Dutchess met the guidelines goals, which was for at least two consecutive years.

New this year, Northern Dutchess – a state-designated stroke center – is furthering its stroke care by collaborating with Vassar Brothers Medical Center’s neurointerventional radiology department, which offers minimally invasive surgeries that can treat conditions that occur within the brain and neck vessels. The benefits may include shorter recovery times, fewer complications and less post-operative pain.
