Northern Dutchess Hospital program helps adults prevent diabetes

A condition called prediabetes is the body’s way of warning about stroke, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes, according to Roufia Payman, a nutrition counselor at Northern Dutchess Hospital.

“You can reverse prediabetes simply by losing a few pounds,” she said.

Payman and fitness trainer Marie Monroe coach the hospital’s National Diabetes Prevention Program, founded in 2014. The next program starts Monday, April 1, in the cafeteria conference room at the hospital’s Rhinebeck campus, 6511 Springbrook Ave. Two sessions are offered — either 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. or 6 to 7 p.m. — for 16 consecutive Mondays and bi-monthly follow-ups for a year.

Monroe, who works in the hospital’s Wellness Center, offers guidance on how people can move more and feel better.

“This is about small steps, like a few minutes of walking daily,” she said.

The lifestyle changes implemented through this national program have proved to help participants lose 5 to 7 percent of their body weight, thus cutting their risk of type 2 diabetes by 50 percent, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The American Diabetes Association recommends that everyone age 45 and older get their blood sugar checked, though you might need to be tested earlier if you're overweight, had pregnancy-related diabetes or have a family history of diabetes. Check with your doctor.

“Prediabetes can make you gain belly fat, have no energy, have trouble sleeping, have skin problems and more. We can help people get back on track for the long term and feel better,” Payman said.
