To help patients make informed decisions about where to receive care, U.S. News & World Report released its Best Hospitals rankings on Tuesday with Vassar Brothers Medical Center named a Best Regional Hospital with high performance in four areas of care and Northern Dutchess Hospital recognized as a high performer in one specialty.

In an evaluation of more than 4,500 hospitals across the United States, Vassar Brothers was recognized as a Best Regional Hospital for high performance in aortic valve surgery, heart bypass surgery, colon cancer surgery and heart failure, while Northern Dutchess received recognition for hip replacement.

"Once again, U.S. News & World Report has recognized Vassar Brothers Medical Center for excellence in cardiac care," said Dr. Daniel O'Dea, vice president of Cardiovascular Services for the hospital's parent organization, Health Quest. "From award-winning cardiac surgery to advanced heart failure care and treatment for heart attack victims, our staff provides excellent and compassionate care to our patients and their families."

"Northern Dutchess takes pride in being recognized, for the second year in a row, for providing the highest standards of care to patients undergoing hip replacement surgery," said Dr. John Sabia, vice president of Medical Affairs for the Rhinebeck-based hospital.

Best Hospitals rankings help guide patients to facilities that deliver outstanding care across several specialties, procedures and conditions. The rankings were determined by healthcare quality measures, such as patient safety and experience, quality of nursing care, readmission rates and more.

For 2018-19, 158 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized hospitals that were high performing across multiple areas of care.

Best Hospitals was produced by U.S. News with RTI International, a research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Rankings will be published in the U.S. News "Best Hospitals 2019" guidebook and can be viewed online at health.usnews.com/best-hospitals.
