Health Quest adds chief of thoracic surgery to enhance care, medical education

Thoracic surgical oncologist Dr. Faiz Bhora has joined Health Quest Medical Practice and will serve as chief of thoracic surgery and associate program director of the general surgery residency program.

With a passion for thoracic oncology surgery, Bhora joins Health Quest from Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. He has more than 15 years of experience.

The Karachi, Pakistan, native specializes in minimally invasive approaches to thoracic diseases, including the use of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), which is performed using a small video camera inserted into the patient's chest, and robotic techniques to perform minimally invasive operations.

Today, his research focuses on regenerative medicine, including 3D printing of the trachea, and machine-learning in robotic surgery, the use of algorithms and statistical models in computer systems to perform specific tasks.

He is actively involved in resident and medical student education and has received national recognition for mentoring young physicians and medical students. He most recently served on the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, part of the Mount Sinai Health System, and was director of the Thoracic Surgery/Robotics elective course.

Prior to joining Health Quest, he served as chief of thoracic surgery at Mount Sinai West and Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital. While working for the health system, he also held the position of director of thoracic surgical oncology, robotic thoracic surgery, research and co-director of the Airway Center.

He earned his medical degree from Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan. He furthered his education with a residency in general surgery at George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, DC, and in thoracic surgery at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. He completed an additional fellowship in thoracic oncology surgery at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Bhora is actively involved in translational research, has authored several publications and regularly lectures at national and international scientific meetings.

He is president of the Eastern Cardiothoracic Surgical Society (ECTSS) and the New York General Thoracic Surgical Club (NYGTSC), the premier general thoracic surgical society in the tri-state area.
