Health Quest Medical Practice appoints chief of cardiovascular surgery

Posted: 1/18/2018

Dr. Jason Sperling has joined Health Quest Medical Practice as chief of cardiovascular surgery.

Sperling has significant expertise in the field and said he is excited to bring several initiatives to his department, including establishing a comprehensive thoracic aorta program, genetics research, advanced interventions including the David procedure, off-pump coronary bypass and pioneering minimally invasive approaches to persistent atrial fibrillation.

“We should provide locally to our patients what we would want to pursue for ourselves and families in the best medical centers in the country,” Sperling said. “With its ever-advancing, cutting-edge cardiovascular care, Vassar Brothers Medical Center will continue to be a leader in cardiovascular health in the Hudson Valley and New York state."

Prior to joining Health Quest, Sperling worked at HealthONE in Colorado, the largest healthcare system in the metro Denver area, where he served as both the director of cardiac surgery and medical director of cardiovascular services.

Before that, Sperling worked at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ, heading both the Thoracic Aneurysm and Bicuspid Aortic Valve Program and the Surgical Atrial Fibrillation Program at the hospital’s Heart and Vascular Institute.

Sperling received his medical degree from the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn and completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Maryland Medical System in Baltimore. He did cutting-edge research in cardiac surgery at Harvard's Boston Children's Hospital, and a fellowship in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the University of Virginia Health System.

His return to the East Coast is a coming home of sorts, he said.

“My family, friends and old colleagues are excited,” Sperling said. “It’s a rare opportunity to work in a cohesive system with great vision. This is a very special group of practitioners and administrators who support one another. Patients have made us the team choice when it comes to their cardiovascular health. We will continue to earn their trust and confidence with skilled physicians and advanced procedures done right at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. ”
