Vassar Brothers Medical Center and Northern Dutchess Hospital were recognized by U.S. News and World Report’s recently published Best Hospitals and High Performing Hospitals rankings.

Both earned High Performing Hospital rantings in several medical specialties, while Vassar Brothers received state and regional rankings for the City of Poughkeepsie-based hospital’s performance across multiple areas of care.

“This is an award that speaks to our ability to deliver safe, excellent care for our patients,” said Kerry Eaton, interim president of Vassar Brothers and chief operating officer of both hospitals. “This is our reason for being and our commitment to our communities.”

To help patients decide where to receive care, about 4,500 hospitals were evaluated in 25 medical specialties, procedures or conditions by the digital news and information company headquartered in Washington, DC, in collaboration with RTI, a market research firm based in Norwalk, Conn.

Vassar Brothers Medical Center ranked No. 25 in New York state and No. 1 in the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh metropolitan area, due to its High Performing Hospital status in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and for the second consecutive year, in colon cancer surgery and heart failure.

Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck ranked as a High Performing Hospital in hip replacement for two consecutive years and knee replacement.

“High performing is in recognition of care that was significantly better than the national average,” said Beth Falder, director of quality metrics for the hospitals. “It is also a significant honor as it is the highest rating U.S. News awards for that type of care.”

The U.S. News Best Hospitals methodologies in most areas of care are based largely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.
