Get In Shape For Surgery

Don’t let the wait before orthopedic surgery drag on. Pass the time by getting your body into shape through exercises tailored specifically for you.

This can be done through a prehabilitation program, which is for pre-surgical conditioning. Included benefits are lower risk for complications and shorten recovery from elective hip and knee joint replacement procedure.

That’s because exercising prior to surgery not only improves strength and range of motion in the affected joint but conditions the whole body to improve overall health and well-being. Two recent studies – one from New Zealand and another from Sarajevo – showed that prehab participants reported higher levels of activity and a quicker return to function when compared to those that do not participate in prehab.

Another aspect of prehab is education. Trained instructors can teach you about your body, which can decrease anxiety related to surgery and increase confidence in your abilities to return to normal activities after surgery.

Northern Dutchess Hospital’s Prehab program at our medically based Wellness Center is designed to address the above factors and can assist patients with preparation for total hip and knee replacement surgeries.

Offered 5 days a week at convenient times, you may sign up for many classes as you’d like, however, medical clearance is required and fees apply. Speak to your orthopedic surgeon to find out if Prehab is right for you. Find out more about Prehab and the Wellness Center at here or call 845-871-4300/ TTYL 800-421-1220.
