The Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion Device

The Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion Device is a new implant device that may reduce the risk of stroke for patients with atrial fibrillation or AFib not caused by a heart valve problem (also known as nonvalvular AFib). The Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion Device is an alternative to lifelong use of blood thinners like warfarin or newer anticoagulants that may put patients at greater risk of bleeding. The implant is inserted through the groin in a lab setting in a one-time, nonsurgical procedure. Once implanted, the device serves to seal off the left atrial appendage (LAA) in the heart, the part of the atrium where most blood clots form. Vassar Brothers Medical Center is already using the Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion Device to effectively treat AFib patients in our care, and help reduce the risk of stroke or internal bleeding caused by their condition or medications.
