Gastrointestinal Cancer Surgery

Health Quest Medical Practice surgeons, led by colorectal specialists Dr. James Nitzkorski and Dr. John Choi, routinely perform complex surgeries and specialize in treating advanced rectal cancer. Procedures include:

  • Colon and Rectal Surgery uses advanced, minimally invasive techniques to remove colorectal cancer and polyps, and in many cases can avoid the need for permanent stomas. Function-preserving operations are frequently performed.
  • Liver Surgery and Nonoperative Treatment Options are available to treat the liver’s complex network of blood vessels and bile ducts, which make operating on this organ exceptionally demanding. Nonoperative options include radiofrequency ablation (RFA), microwave ablation and chemoembolization (TACe) for the treatment of liver cancer and metastatic tumors.
  • Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery can be performed without the need to make large incisions and can spare nerves that control sexual function. Procedures include a protocol for a completely scarless transanal endoscopic mucosal (TEM) resection.
  • da Vinci® Robotic Surgery provides even greater vision, dexterity and precision compared to standard minimally invasive surgery techniques. This allows our surgeons to perform a wider range of procedures. To learn more, see Robotic Surgery.

Surgical Oncology Procedures

Thoracic surgeon Dr. Cliff P. Connery routinely performs complex surgeries and is highly experienced in robotic and video-assisted surgeries at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.

Several of the procedures below can be performed using Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) or the minimally invasive da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System, which provides even greater vision, dexterity and precision compared to standard minimally invasive techniques.

These are just a few of the many procedures used to treat lung cancer and esophageal cancer and other thoracic diseases:

  • Segmentectomy, which is removal of only a small part of the lung
  • Lobectomy, which is removal of an entire lobe of the lung
  • Pneumonectomy, which is removal of an entire lung
  • Thymectomy, which is removal of the thymus (a gland located under the breastbone) in patients suffering from MG or tumors of the thymus
  • Diaphragm reconstruction
  • Chest wall resection and reconstruction
  • Limited resection for lung cancer
  • Esophagectomy and Esophagogastrectomy surgeries to remove the part of the esophagus with cancer and any affected lymph nodes and stomach parts
