Minimally Invasive Procedures Offer Hope for Treating Cervical Cancer, Ovarian Cancer and Other Gynecologic Cancers.

Gynecologic cancers affect the tissue and organs of the female reproductive system and include cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, vaginal cancer and vulvar cancer. Gynecologic cancer specialists treat these delicate areas using advanced technology like da Vinci® Robotic Surgery. Together with radiologists, oncology-trained nurses and therapists, they devise customized, holistic treatment plans for patients.

Hysterectomy via Robotic Surgery

The da Vinci® Hysterectomy is one of the most effective and least invasive treatment options, particularly for challenging procedures like a partial or radical hysterectomy for gynecologic cancer.

With the da Vinci® Robotic Surgery, the surgeon can more precisely dissect and remove cancerous tissues. The surgeon also has better visualization of the anatomy, which is especially critical when working around delicate areas.

Radiation Therapy

Using the most advanced equipment, the radiation oncologists can precisely target the cancerous area while minimizing impact on the surrounding healthy area. This increases the chances for success and can lead to a speedier recovery. Radiation can take place during or after therapy. Your radiation oncologist will discuss the best course of treatment for your situation.

Radiation therapies commonly used to treat gynecologic cancers include:

  • Intraoperative therapy is used in the operating room during surgery. In this therapy, a small machine provides low-energy radiation to a specific target exposed during surgery.
  • External Beam Radiation Therapy directs a beam of radiation at the cancerous area to destroy the tumor and any nearby cancer cells. The team can control the size and shape of the beam, as well as how it is directed at the patient’s body. This treatment spares surrounding normal tissue.
  • Brachytherapy (or internal radiation therapy) involves placing a radioactive seed in or very close to the tumor, allowing the radiation oncologist to deliver a large dose of radiation directly to the cancerous cells with minimal impact on the surrounding tissue.
